Definition of Martial Arts
Martial art can be defined as a system of techniques and exercises purposefully designed to defend yourself against a physical attack or defeat and overcome an opponent. Martial arts are generally regarded as a philosophy as well as science and art.
Martial arts emphasises a great deal on personal discipline and honour and what underlines its concept is how to find harmony with yourself, with others and ultimately with the existing universe.
Martial arts can be practiced individually, in group formation and also competitively. There are many different forms of martial arts with different fighting styles but generally they concentrate on developing physical strength, self defence, striking, grappling, internal energy and training with weapon.
Many martial arts, especially those which are originated from far-East Asia, also educate their apprentice with variety of different knowledge such as pressure points, medicinal practices, healing and herbal remedies. Martial arts can also be associated with religion, philosophy and spirituality.
Mehdi Zand defines the martial science as a calculated fighting strategy based on the psychological analysis of the opponent.
